Martin has had roles in banking in the UK and Dubai (in risk and equipment finance), as a chief and project accountant in the UK and Bahrain and as an audit senior in chartered accountancy firms.
Achievements
- Carrying out long and short term Compliance engagements at Lloyd’s Managing Agents; this included, inter alia, implementing monitoring plans, writing the reinsurance policy and strategy, setting up a Lloyd’s service company in Singapore and assisting with a Conduct Risk Review of retail Binding Authorities, Lineslips and syndicate branded products.
- Group Company Secretary for a major insurance subsidiary of Munich Re.
- Interpreted and implemented Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) from policy to quarterly reporting of management information from internal and external sources to demonstrate and ensure compliance with FSA guidance and principles.
- Established , managed and carried out risk based compliance reviews/audits of co-insurers, managing agents (many of them Lloyd’s), and appointed representatives in UK, EEA states, USA and Australia, ensuring acceptance of recommendations from over 50 risk-based compliance audits.
- Obtained FCA/SFA authorisation/variation for four new investment businesses, two of them as an independent compliance consultant.
- Prepared Gissings Group for transformation from PIA to FCA, establishing risk registers and persuading FCA that company was low-risk, resulting in a longer supervisory visit cycle.
- Established risk-based internal audit functions in Gissings and The Sakura Bank Ltd., London branch obtaining acceptance for and implementing many recommendations.
- Reviewed Gissings Group Pensions review arrangements and introduced remedial plans, subsequently successfully defending discovery by FCA and referral to Enforcement. Built up team of 25 to carry out 7 years work in 2½.
- Undertaking compliance consultant roles and interim management assignments in the banking, securities, Wealth Management and IFA sectors.
- At Sakura Bank, liaised with Bank of England/FCA, SFA and LIFFE on all rule and regulatory matters, and obtained approval for dealing, options dealing and credit default swaps.
- Structured and set terms of reference of a new middle office for The Sakura Bank Ltd.
- Designed and delivered training on complex compliance issues such as TCF, anti-money laundering regulations and anti-bribery policies.
